Girls Soccer to semi-final
King's soccer back in state semifinals By Tony Dondero Enterprise reporter King’s put a 3-0 whipping on Overlake in the state quarterfinals Friday, Nov. 14 at Woolsey Stadium to earn its third straight trip to the Class 1A final four.
King’s (18-2) faces the winner of Saturday’s game between Seattle Christian and Montesano at 6 p.m. Nov. 21 at Sunset Chev Stadium in Sumner.
After a scoreless first half, the Knights stepped up the offensive attack in the second half, launching 12 shots to Overlake’s three.
Junior forward Hillary Zevenbergen scored on a header in the 51st minute off a corner kick by junior midfielder Kendall Thoreson.
“Kendall’s good at crosses,” Zevenbergen said. “We try to capitalize on those as best as we can.”
Sophomore forward Christian McCormick added a goal in the 69th minute off an assist by Ashley Roe. Junior defender Hillary Quinn knocked in an insurance goal off a corner from Thoreson in the 78th minute.
“We find the net,” King’s coach Nicole Gabelein said. “It took us a little bit to score, we had plenty off shots.”
King’s finished with 19 shots on goal to Overlake’s three for the game.
“When they decided to bring eleven back and put all their team behind the (20-yard line) we pushed up on them,” Gabelein said. “That’s when we basically started scoring when we changed things around.”
Thoresen is the Knights playmaker from her center midfield spot, taking the free and corner kicks.
“She is all over the field,” Gabelein said. Carolyn Dapper earned the shutout in goal for the Knights. King’s has been to the state semifinals in the first two years of the program but this is the year the Knights feel they can win it all after taking the Cascade Conference, District 1 and tri-district titles. Should Seattle Christian win Saturday, the Knights would face them in the state playoffs for the third straight year. Seattle Christian beat King’s in a shootout in the semifinals two years ago and also beat them in the third-place game last year.
