King's races to semi win

Nobody saw the King’s Knights coming, but that’s just the way they like it.

The Knights lost three of their first eight games, pretty much assuring they’d never be in the Class 1A state rankings. But Saturday night at 9, they’ll be playing for the Class 1A title.

Junior guard Ryan Hoff, who was primarily a garbage-time player on the Knights’ fifth-place team of 2008, drilled four first-half 3-pointers as King’s built a 10-point halftime lead, then scored the first five points of the second half as the unranked Knights routed No. 3 Port Townsend 48-31.

“We definitely came into every one of these state games as underdogs,” Hoff said after scoring his game-high 16 points to move the Knights into the championship game against Vashon. “I think everybody was thinking King’s was down this year, and every game we came in with the attitude that those guys were trying to take this from us.”

Instead, the Knights (20-7) played at a tempo and with an intensity the Redskins (22-4) simply couldn’t match. Port Townsend star Parker McClelland, a presumptive all-stater, could manage only 5-for-15 shooting against the active King’s defense, while the Knights were very efficient on offense. They shot 46 percent from the field, with Hoff going 4-for-5 on 3’s.

Knights coach Bill Liley had warned his teams about how some shooters struggle in the SunDome, the vast backdrop skewing their perspective. And he had his players get comfortable by attacking the basket on opening day, passing up outside shots.

“After that, I kind of let my shooters go,” Liley said. “And boy, has he (Hoff) come on.”

“Coach said a lot of teams have a hard time adjusting to shooting in here with the backdrop,” Hoff said, then grinned. “I got used to it real quick.”

The Knights’ three tournament victories clearly weren’t ready for the Knights to be as potent as they are, but their schedule was tough. They lost in a big-team tournament in California; they lost to 3A Bishop Blanchet; they lost twice to Archbishop Murphy, which spent much of the season in the 2A state rankings. But they also beat Brewster and Bellevue Christian this season, as well as 2A state tournament qualifier Sultan.

“I learned that” — the tough-schedule, stay-under-the-radar strategy — “from him,” Liley said, gesturing toward Marv Morris, his predecessor as Knights coach. “And it worked.

“But now, it doesn’t matter what our record is or who knows about it. We’ve got one game, and one shot.”

King's tops Chelan in OT

Nick Hardy opened overtime with a 3-pointer -- his only field goal of the game -- and it pushed King's ahead to stay as the Knights went on for a 69-66 upset win over Chelan on Thursday in the Class 1A boys state tournament quarterfinals.

Ryan Hoff, who led King's with 28 points and made 8 of 14 treys, followed with a 3-pointer, and the Knights held off the Goats with free throws to advance to Friday's 8 p.m. semifinals.

Sean Brugger added 15 points and Zack Berg 10 for King's (19-7). Alex Mar dished out 13 assists.

Chelan's Joe Harris sent the game into overtime with a 3-pointer with 14 seconds in regulation that knotted the score at 58-58. A last-second King's shot at the buzzer missed its mark.

Harris scored 38 points on 13-of-17 shooting, including four 3-pointers. But he picked up his fifth foul on a charge with 25 seconds left in overtime and the Goats (23-5) trailing 66-64.

Mat Engstrom added 13 points and six rebounds for Chelan.

King's led the entire second half until Harris' game-tying shot.

The Knights made just 40 percent (21 of 53) of their shots, while Chelan converted 52 percent (25 of 48).

King's rolls to 42-23 win

TOURNEYTOWN.COM Ryan Hoff scored 13 points and Karl Clocksin added 10 as King's raced past Kalama 42-23 in the first round of the Class 1A boys state tournament Wednesday.

The Knights (18-7) led the entire game, building a 23-point (40-17) late in the contest. King's got off to a sluggish start, though the Knights led Kalama 8-0 after the first quarter.

“Last year was such an emotional thing for us, to lose that first game at state against Connell,” King's coach Bill Liley said. “Maybe I dwelt on it too much, because I’ve talked to the kids about it a lot, and maybe that made the kids a little more tight coming out. We had talked about not wanting to feel that way again.”

Nick Hardy grabbed five of the Knights' 13 steals.

King's converted 16 of 40 (40 percent) of its shots to just 28 percent (10 of 36) for the Chinooks (16-9).

Robby Sanders led Kalama with 11 points and seven rebounds, and teammate Ryan Chiodo also pulled down seven rebounds.

Zack Berg and Sean Brugger grabbed nine and eight rebounds, respectively, for King's.

The Knights will face Chelan and its top scorer, Joe Harris, in Thursday's 7:30 p.m. quarterfinal.

“I think he’s (Harris) a very talented kid,” Liley said. “He has to do a lot for his team for them to be as good as they are. That’s going to be the job and the challenge for our coaching staff tonight, to stay up late and try to figure out a way to stop him.”

King's starts fast, whips Bellevue Christian

SEATTLE - With its pride on the line, the King’s boys basketball team didn’t want to risk being unprepared for Bellevue Christian in the King Holiday Hoopfest, Monday, Jan. 19.

The Knights had a 7 a.m. shoot around at Mike Martin Gym before heading down to the University of Washington’s Hec Edmundson Pavilion for the 9:30 a.m. game. The wide awake Knights burst out to an 11-0 lead and made their first eight field goals en route to a 59-52 victory.

Bellevue Christian blew out King’s, 79-38, the last time the two teams played at the 1A state tournament in March 2007. In that game, Bellevue Christian guard Jeff Downs scored more points than the entire King’s team and broke King’s alum Chris Faidley’s all-time 1A tournament scoring record.

Karl Clocksin, who was named the game’s most valuable player on Monday, said the players had been talking about that game and were playing for pride.

“You have to show some pride out here,” he said. “They’re a good team. They brought it back within reach but we held on.”

King’s came out on fire, thanks to a screen-and-roll play to Clocksin and Kyle Talbot and a 3-pointer from Nick Hardy.“We talked about having a quick start,” King’s coach Bill Liley said.

“Our feet were like glued to the floor,” Bellevue Christian coach Mike Downs said. King’s led 20-11 after the first quarter and by as many as 15 in the second.

King’s took a 16-point lead early in the third on a basket by Clocksin, but the Vikings rallied to get within five.

Bellevue Christian’s David Downs scored 18 of his game-high 27 points in the second half to help the rally. The Vikings cut it to 53-48 with 2:23 left on a Downs free throw, but that’s as close as they would get.

King’s co-captains Hardy and Alex Mar made four free throws in the final minute to put the game out of reach. The Vikings didn’t have much time to prepare for what King’s does, and had trouble in the first half with their screens on offense and switches on defense, Downs said.

“Our effort the first half wasn’t what it needed to be,” Downs said. The Vikings shot 72 percent from the field in the second half and 54 percent for the game (21-of-39) but made only 7-of-16 free throws for 44 percent.

Hardy led King’s with 15 points, 12 of them coming in the first half. Talbot scored 14 points while Clocksin added 12. Talbot played his best half of the season in the first half before fouling out in the second, Liley said. Clocksin took a shot to the mouth during a play where he picked up a foul during the first half. He sported a bloody lip but came back to finish up a strong game.

King’s made 47 percent of its field goals on 23-of-49 shooting, including three 3-pointers, two by Hardy and one by Zach McDonald. The Knights made 67 percent of their free throws on 10-of-15 shooting. “We wanted to come back and play well,” Liley said. “It’s about this team right now, what they can be.”
